It is fairly easy to figure out if your air conditioner needs a repair, but the line between a regular AC repair and an AC emergency is quite blurry. So, what is considered an AC emergency and when should you make the call? Here are five scenarios in which you should call for an emergency air conditioner repair.

Little to no airflow

The most common reason to low air conditioner airflow is a very dirty filter or blocked vents. This is something you can check yourself, but if this is not the cause of low airflow, you should shut your unit off and call for a repair as soon as possible. Forcing your air conditioner to work harder to cool your home with poor airflow will only cause more problems.

Warm air

If your air conditioner is blowing warm air, always check the filter and cleanliness of the unit first. When a dirty filter inhibits airflow, it keeps the unit from cooling air, doesn’t clean the remaining air running through the unit, and that unfiltered debris builds up on the evaporator coils. All of this will cause the unit to blow warm air. No need to call for an emergency repair, but replace the filter and get the unit professionally cleaned as soon as possible.

In addition to cleanliness, check for ice on the evaporator coils. If there is ice, turn off the unit and call for an emergency repair. This could mean refrigerant is leaking which is bad for your unit and your health.

Strong Odor

If the odor coming from your air conditioner is musty, there is likely some water accumulating that is not properly draining from the unit. This is not a reason to call for an emergency repair, but the unit should be professionally inspected and cleaned.

If the odor smells like sulfur, burning, or sweet, turn the unit off immediately, evacuate your home and call for an emergency repair. These smells could mean leaking natural gas, a burning part in the unit, or a refrigerant leak that is contaminating the air in your home.

Electrical Issue

An electrical issue is almost always a reason to call for an emergency repair. If your unit only works intermittently, only runs under certain settings, or continuously trips the breaker, we recommend turning the unit off and getting the wiring checked. These could be minor issues, but a poorly installed wiring could lead to an electrical fire.

Not cooling during extreme temps

If it is dangerously hot outside and your air conditioner is not keeping up, it is time to call for an emergency AC repair. The repair could be minor, but having no air conditioning during heat waves or extreme temperatures could be hazardous to everyone in the home.
