Below are some of the most common questions we receive. If you don’t see your question, do not hesitate to call us or contact us online!
Do you charge by the hour?
We do not charge by the hour. We offer flat rates for all our services, even if we are servicing your system all day.
How do I know if my system is under warranty?
Most manufacturers provide warranty dates on their website. Look for the brand and serial number on your system. Some manufacturers will list a manufacturing date directly on the unit or in the owner’s manual that came with the unit.
How often do I have to change my filters?
How regularly you should install new air filters depends on the types of air filters you use, indoor air quality of your home, number of pets, household size, and air pollution levels. Manufacturers typically recommend replacing filters every 30–90 days. If you have bad allergies and multiple pets, you should replace your filter monthly. If you do not have pets and your home is not occupied 24/7, you can change your filter once per season.
Is an HVAC system tuneup necessary?
Getting a professional tuneup for your furnace or air conditioner will prolong the life of the system and keep it running efficiently, saving you money short and long-term. While the system will still run without a tuneup, paying a small amount for a tuneup once per system per year will likely save you hundreds of dollars.
How often should I have my furnace and air conditioner serviced?
We recommend getting your air conditioner checked in the Spring and your furnace in the Fall. This ensures they both run efficiently during their season and are pumping clean air through your home. A tuneup might even prevent an unexpected breakdown!
When do I call for emergency service?
Shut your system off immediately and call for an emergency service repair if:
- Your thermostat is not responding
- Your system is making loud, strange sounds
- You smell gas or it smells like something is burning
- Cold air is coming from your heating system, or warm air is coming from your cooling system
- Your system is experiencing electrical issues
- Your air conditioner is causing water damage
How do I know if I need a new furnace or air conditioner?
If your system is more than 15 years old, needs constant repairs, cannot properly heat or cool your home, or is costing you a lot to run monthly, it’s likely time to replace the unit. An inefficient, aging system is not worth keeping. Contact an HVAC expert like CT Heating & Air to take a look at your system and make sure there isn’t an easy fix before you need to replace the unit.
What is refrigerant?
If you’ve had your air conditioner or heat pump serviced before, you may have heard a technician mention refrigerant. The refrigerant in your air conditioner runs through a closed coil system and absorbs the heat in the air. Your air conditioner then pushes the cooled air through your vents and cools your home.
What does HVAC stand for?
HVAC stands for “Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.” It’s a generic term used to describe the technology and products that heat or cool your home.
What is SEER?
SEER is a measure of cooling efficiency that stands for “Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ration”. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the cooling system. Although costs may be higher upfront for a system with a high SEER, you will likely enjoy lower utility bills that will more than make up for the initial investment.
