As cold days become more regular throughout Colorado, it’s important you get your furnace ready for the Winter season. Even though Colorado frequently gets warm days throughout the Winter giving your furnace and heating bill a break, every furnace needs a little TLC to run efficiently. Here are 5 simple ways you can prepare your furnace for Winter.

#1 Change the Air Filter

At a minimum, you should be changing your filter in the Fall, or before your furnace starts regularly kicking on. A dirty filter will inhibit airflow, make your unit work harder, raise your energy bill, and not completely clean the air running through the unit. This will cause more problems which will cost more down the road. In addition to changing the filter, make sure you check the filter regularly and change it as often as the furnace manufacturer recommends.

#2 Clean Around the Furnace Burners

Dust and debris tend to accumulate on the furnace’s burners when the furnace goes unused throughout Summer. Before you flip your thermostat to heat, check the area around the burners and clean any debris. If something does not look right or you aren’t sure how to properly clean the area, always call an HVAC professional.

#3 Oil the Furnace Blower

The furnace blower motor plays a huge role in the efficiency of the unit. Start by checking the owner’s manual to see if your motor needs lubricating. If it does, turn off power to the furnace, open the cover and clean the caps covering the bearings. Then remove the caps and lubricate the bearings.

#4 Schedule a Furnace Tune-Up

The best thing you can do to prolong the life of your furnace is to get a tune-up in the Fall. An HVAC professional will take care of any necessary repairs and clean the unit, ensuring your unit is running efficiently and avoiding any preventable repairs. Don’t put it off until it’s too late!
