As warm days become more regular throughout Colorado, it’s important you get your air conditioning system ready for the long stretches of heat. Every AC unit needs a little TLC to run as efficiently as possible. Here are 5 simple ways you can prepare your air conditioner for the summer heat.

#1 Change the Air Filter

At a minimum, you should be changing your filter in the Spring, or before your air conditioner starts regularly kicking on. A dirty filter will inhibit airflow, make your unit work harder, raise your energy bill, and not completely clean the air running through the unit. This will cause more problems which will cost more down the road. In addition to changing the filter, make sure you check the filter regularly and change it as often as the AC manufacturer recommends.

#2 Clean Coils and Drain Lines

Similar to replacing the filter, your coils and drain lines being clean will allow your unit to run more efficiently. A clogged or worn drain line could cause a water leak, dirty coils could cause your unit to freeze up, and both make your unit work harder to cool your home. We always recommend getting a tune-up at the beginning of the season so an HVAC professional can ensure your unit is clean and running properly.

#3 Clean Around the Outdoor Unit

There’s a good chance your outdoor AC unit has accumulated some debris throughout Winter. It’s important to clean around the unit so your home is less susceptible to fires and your unit runs properly. In general, it’s best to keep all debris and vegetation at least 2 feet away from the unit.

#4 Check your Fan Blades

While the unit is off, check the fan blades to make sure they are clean and undamaged. Turn on the unit and make sure the fan is running properly. If you see anything that doesn’t look right, ask an HVAC professional to take a look. Damaged fan blades are a relatively inexpensive repair, but going unfixed could cause much more damage.

#5 Schedule an AC Tune-Up

The best thing you can do to prolong the life of your AC unit is to get a tune-up at the beginning of the warm season. An HVAC professional will take care of any necessary repairs and clean the unit, ensuring your unit is running efficiently and avoiding any preventable repairs. Don’t put it off until it’s too late!
