Below we have listed 4 of the most common air conditioner repair scams. If you think you are getting scammed, always call one or more HVAC technicians for a second opinion!

Refrigerant Needs to be Recharged

The refrigerant recharge scam is very common because it is a problem that will happen again and again, meaning more service calls. Your refrigerant runs through a closed system, so if your unit is low on refrigerant, that means there is a leak in your condenser coils. If your technician says you need a recharge, they are billing you for refrigerant you should not need!

If you do get your coils fixed, you will also need to pay for the refrigerant. Always make sure you are getting the amount of refrigerant you are paying for. The tech should weigh the refrigerant bottle before and after and you will pay the difference.

Quote that is Too Good to be True

If you get a quote from an HVAC technician that is significantly cheaper than all other quotes/competition and it seems to good to be true, it most likely is. All HVAC businesses have to make a profit, so if your final bill or quote is extremely low, a corner was likely cut.

We recommend getting several quotes for larger repairs, but always make sure you receive a written agreement from an HVAC technician.

Replacing Parts that Do Not Need Replacing

If you call for a particular service and your HVAC technician says you need one or more other repairs, always ask for proof. Always be weary if they cannot show you the broken part or if the replacement is extremely expensive. As we recommend above, always get a second opinion!

Bait and Switch

It’s common for companies to run promotions to get an influx of business, but some HVAC companies use a promotion to get in the door, take advantage of this time, and be dishonest about the condition of your unit. Always ask for proof, and always get a second opinion for an expensive repair!
